Description

Dimensions - Length 0480 cm
Plan Form - SQUARE
Grade II+. Dovecote. Probably C16 repaired c.1980. Coursed rubble clunch with some flint and tile. Large dressed stone blocks at quoins. Pyramid tile roof, central timber entry turret with similar roof. Square, the N.W. side having a small doorway with chamfered semi-circular arch of clunch. RCHM I p.259 Mon.5 (B2).
An ancient dove house, square built, of stone, with an arched entrance (B5).
Pigeon-house: a square C16 building of clunch rubble & roughly squared limestone; the pyramidal roof is tiled and has a small lantern. N doorway is of curious detail, in clunch, probably of late C16 date, possibly brought from elsewhere (B1).
Dove-cot built of very coarsely-squared 'clunch', or the lower chalk - 'rag'. The walls are about 2ft 8in thick & inside measurement of building is about 15 1/2 ft each way. There were only 216 cotes as they are not brought within some ft of the ground. The building might be even earlier than the date given, for it seems of primitive construction. E wall of building collapsed completely; until then in good working order (B3).
Whilst the E wall has been rebuilt, the building generally is in a bad state of repair, with a hole in the S wall, and the majority of tiles missing on the roof. Vandalism would appear to be the cause (B4).
