NAME BACKHAM HILL POPULARLY SUPPOSED TO BE A CORRUPTION OF BEACON HILL BEING ANCIENTLY USED FOR LIGHTING BEACON AT TIME OF WAR (B1). CERTAINLY HAS BEEN USED AS BEACON (B3). PROBABLE BARROW SUBSEQUENTLY USED AS BEACON STATION (B5).
