Description

Grade II. Milestone. Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century. Shown on map of 1799. Squared stone with pyramidal top. Inscriptions read: facing road 'Uxbridge 3', facing east 'London 18 Oxford 36 Beaconsfield 5' and facing west '18 miles from London'. This milestone was turned round through 90 degrees in 1994 following re-surfacing work to the pavement (B1).
Recorded as present in 2001 on Milestones Society survey web site on A40 Uxbridge to Stokenchurch route National ID number BU_LW18 .On north side of road at Tatling End outside Capswood office block opposite Ugly Duck PH.45cm wide 38cm deep 118cm high. 'Presumably reset when office block built in 2001'. Inscription: left: 18 MILES from LONDON: front: Uxbridge 3: right: London 18 Oxford 16 Beaconsfield 5. Confirmed by handwritten notes on microfiched OSD surveyors drawings (1814) were in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 48 sheet XLVIII page 6 of notes. Inscription: London 18. On Beaconsfield to Denham (B2) route. Also on page 7 of notes museum number 53/2 sheet XLVIII. Tatling End towards Uxbridge A40 (B1) route. Notes on 1" OS map (1835). In same notes under " MILESTONES (In site 1986 except ?). In red C1/2/3/4/5/6/7 L1." On OS 1" 1835, Bryant and Jefferies. 18: S. of Phoenix Garage, A.40. In same notes under J in red box. Milestones. 1825 Bryant- Marked from W Wycombe to Bushy Leys. Also under B in red box Milestones. 1788 Jefferys - nos 16- 34. 1825 Bryant - nos 16- 34. 1835 . 1835 O.S. 1" - .
