Description

Grade II. Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century milestone. Shown on a map of 1799. Squared stone with pyramidal top. Facing the road the inscription reads "London 17 Oxford 37 Beaconsfield 6" and facing east "Uxbridge 2". This stone was designed to be on the north side of the road. Recorded as present in 2001 on Milestones Society website on A40 Uxbridge to Stokenchurch route National ID number BU_LW17. On Oxford Road Denham Green in hedge by fence. On south side of road 45cm wide 39cm deep 81cm high. Inscription: left: Uxbridge 2: front: London 17 Oxford 37 Beaconsfield 6. Carved benchmark right side middle.' Moss on lower face.' Confirmed by handwritten notes on microfiched OSD surveyors drawings (1814) were in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 48 sheet XLVIII page 6 of notes. Inscription : London 17. On Beaconsfield to Denham (B2) route. Also recorded on page 7 of notes museum number 53/2 sheet XLVIII. Inscription: London 17 Uxbridge 2. Tatling End towards Uxbridge A40 (B1) route. From notes on 1" OS map (1835). In same notes under "MILESTONES (In site 1986 ?). In red C1/2/3/4/5/6/7 L1." On Bryant and Jefferies. 17: Opp. A412 turning. In same notes J in red box. Milestones. 1825 Bryant - Marked from W. Wycombe to Bushey Leys and under B in red box.1835 O.S. 1" - . Nos 16 - 37 (alteration of county boundary ). See also underlined in blue. 1885 O.S. 6" positions marked + mileage written in. R.I.E. This according to Peter Gullands extensive study Thr Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 this milestone is on The Red Hill and Beaconsfild Turnpike Road 1751 p.137.
