Description
GRADE II. EARLY TO MID C19. SQUARED RUBBLE WITH ASHLAR DRESSINGS, FLAT ROOFS WITH BALUSTRADED PARAPE TS. SINGLE STOREY, 2 SASHES IN REVEALS WITH GLAZING BARS, FLAT ARCHES. CENTRAL 6 PANEL DOORS UNDER S TONE BRACKETED HOODS. VERMICULATED ANGLE PILASTERS , MODILLION CORNICES. PANELS OVER WINDOWS AND DOORWAYS, ARABESQUE RELIEF IN CENTRE, FIGURE RELIEFS EITHER SIDE.
The National Trust's survey for Stowe undertaken in 1989 makes reference to the two lodges as the 'Buckingham Lodges'. It suggests that they were probably built in the 1770s and perhaps designed by Valdre. They have new extensions on the back and part of the parapet of the western lodge is missing (1)
Evaluation trial trenching carried out in July 2004 by Northants Archaeology in advance of proposed restoration found traces of a cobbled surface and two gravel paths, shown on the 1881 1st edition OS map. Previous landscaping had caused some truncation (B28).
